Victor ‘Cortez’ Fontes is a Fresno State Media, Communication and Journalism major with an emphasis in Broadcast Media. He will graduate in the spring of 2027 with his bachelor's degree, and plans to pursue a career in radio and television as a news reporter.

 

Cortez first became involved with FSR Underground when enrolled in the MCJ125 class Radio News and Podcasting, which produces the Fresno State Focus: Radio Edition program that airs on Saturday mornings on FSR Underground.  After meeting and working with station manager Julie Logan Lindahl, she invited him to explore the wide range of opportunities provided by the radio station.  The prospect of learning the fundamentals of voice work, audio production and more motivated him to dive further into the wild and wonderful world of radio.

 

Victor currently hosts the weekday morning show (M-F from 6 am to 10 am) playing alternative rock pulling music from Alternative Rock, Indie Rock, and Triple-A formats. Cortez also serves as a student intern for the Spring 2026 semester.

 

Music has always been an important part of Cortez’s life.  He enjoys a wide variety of genres, but relates most to indie-rock and indie-pop. His choice of music lies in auditory dreamscapes where the instruments and lyrics come together in such a way that it soothes the soul. Music is an anchor in his life, and he is grateful to be involved with FSR Underground that provides a source of true alternative music for listeners.

 

In his free time Victor loves to explore outlets that exercise his creative muscles. He paints, plays the drums, edits video projects and practices photography. He also enjoys spending time with friends and family, his number one priority. He proudly states that nothing in life gives him more happiness than being around his loved ones. 

 

Last, but not least:  A fun fact about Cortez is that he has been working as a journalist for over three years. He worked for Fresno City College’s student new organization, The Rampage Online, as a social media manager and lifestyle editor.  He now serves at Fresno State’s newspaper, The Collegian, as a multimedia reporter. Along the way he has specialized in photo and video media with a knack for social media content.
