FSR Underground is more than a campus radio station. It is a space that values individuality, collaboration, and growth, offering students the chance to gain real experience while contributing to something vibrant and unique...

I first became involved with FSR Underground after a friend recommended the station to me. I sent a cold email, hoping for a creative opportunity that would help me fulfill my MCJ 191i requirement. What began as a way to earn class credit quickly grew into something far more meaningful, and I chose to remain involved even after the semester ended.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my time with FSR Underground was the community I found there. I have many fond memories working alongside peers both in the office and at events like football games. A favorite memory of mine will always be nearly getting knocked over as a football player rolled in our direction on the sidelines. We spent the rest of the game laughing at the clip of us dodging live on TV, and in the process, built friendships that have lasted well beyond the internship. To this day, I continue to turn to colleagues from the station for advice on PR and advertising projects.

Professionally, FSR Underground gave me the chance to develop skills across many areas of media and communications. I recorded voiceovers for PSAs, appeared on camera for social media videos, and produced video content that reflected the station’s energy and style. I assisted with event planning and representation through CSU Summer Arts and several campus tabling events, gaining firsthand experience in public-facing promotion. I also helped launch Club FSR Underground, where we brought live music to the Free Speech Area, distributed station materials, and increased campus visibility. My primary focus, however, was on social media, where I created a recurring series that introduced new artists through original graphics and written features, and produced video content that adapted current trends.

These experiences gave me the freedom to experiment with design and strategy while developing technical skills. More importantly, I learned how to adapt my creative voice to align with the station’s alternative identity. The result was an internship that not only strengthened my professional abilities but also gave me confidence in my capacity to tell stories across platforms.

FSR Underground is more than a campus radio station. It is a space that values individuality, collaboration, and growth, offering students the chance to gain real experience while contributing to something vibrant and unique. I am grateful I sent that initial email and became part of the team. For anyone considering it, I would strongly recommend the experience.
